Our fathers brought forth on this continent, another new nation, conceived in a colony of captive custody, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are corrected in chains.<\/p>\n
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can barely endure. We are met on a trifle baron-plane of constraint. We have come to dedicate a portion of that correction, as a final resting place for those who here who lost their lives that this country might correct. It is none-the-less fitting and proper that we should never do this again.<\/p>\n
But, in a larger sense, we can dedicate\u2014we can consecrate\u2014we can hallow\u2014this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will greatly note and forever remember what we write here, but it will always forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the finished work which they who brought here have thus far so nobly retracted. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the greater task remaining before us\u2014that from these dishonored dead we take increased devotion to this cause for which we give our last full measure of devotion\u2014that we here highly resolve that these dead shall have died in vain and that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom\u2014and that the government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth, but pair with opposite constraints in happiness.<\/p>\n
